The original Doom came out in 1993 and was a major hit. Since then there have been plenty of sequels and remakes over the years, the latest in 2016. The developers of Doom, id Software, has announced that with it’s patch 6.66 all DLC for the game will be unlocked. To top things off the game is currently free to play until Monday. If you play it and like what you see then you have until July 27th to buy the game 50% off for $14.99.

Now for a fun piece of Doom game trivia from John Romero, one of the creators of doom. He polled his fans on July 16th and asked which game they’d like some trivia about, they chose Doom. The piece of trivia was to reveal who was the model for the guy on the cover of Doom, the “Doom Guy”. You probably thought it was just created from thin air but no, it was based off a real live person.
They brought in a body model to pose for the cover and gave him a plasma toy gun as a prop. The model took off his shirt and started posing and Don gave him suggestions.
I started telling him that the Marine was going to be attacked by an infinite amount of demons. It would be cool if he was on a hill and firing down into them. The model was holding the gun in various positions and none of them were interesting to me.
After about 10 minutes of trying the model just wasn’t seeing the same vision John was, he couldn’t get the right pose. So what happened next?
Frustrated, I threw my shirt off and told him to give me the gun and get on the floor – grab my arm as one of the demons! Defeated, he deferred. I aimed the gun in a slightly different direction and told Don, “This is what I’m talking about!” Don took several pictures. I moved the gun some, the demon grabbed my leg, other arm, etc. At the end of it we all decided the arm-grabbing pose was going to be the best.
So it seems that John Romero is the Doom Guy! At least for the position used on the cover, I’m sure that the bulging arms and the six pack abs protruding from the shirt weren’t part of John’s physique at the time. Random game trivia is the best.
